Back to topAnti-doping: new Prohibited List comes into force on 1 January 2013
States that are party to the International Convention against Doping in Sport have made a commitment to recognize a unified list of prohibited substances and practices in sport: the Prohibited List. This list appears as annex I to the Convention, adopted by UNESCO in 2005, and is based on the very same list developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for sports federations.
When WADA recently revised its list, states decided to follow suit using identical wording. As a result of their recent decision, the 2013 Prohibited List will become the new annex I to the Convention from 1 January 2013. Once again, governments’ and sports federations’ prohibited list will be identical.
This coordination is a success story in the effort to harmonize and simplify rules designed to restrict and control doping in sport, while tolerating therapeutic exceptions.
