Close of International Year for the Rapprochment between Cultures

The International Year for the Rapprochement between Cultures (2010) has drawn to a close. Throughout the Year, hundreds of individuals, governmental bodies and non governmental organizations around the world, worked together on over one thousand projects aimed at “re-thinking” the new pluralist realities of human society and celebrating cultural diversity.

To mark the close of the Year, UNESCO and the Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture (ISESCO) have organized a debate that will be held on 28 April (10:30 am – 1:30pm in Room 2) on the theme “2010 , International year for the rapprochement between Cultures: Seeds of Hope”.  It will be moderated by leading French journalist Vincent Hervouët.  

Key addresses will be made by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO; Davidson Hepburn, President of the General Conference; Eleonora Mitrofanova, Chairperson of the Executive Board; Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director-General of ISESCO; and Gaziz Telebayev, Vice-Minister of Culture of Kazakhstan. 

An open debate will also take place and include various personalities from the spheres of academics, politics, culture and media including; Hubert Védrine, former French Minister for Foreign Affairs, Homi Bhabha, Professor at Harvard University, Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, Director of France Culture. Representatives of National Commissions for UNESCO and NGOs will give accounts of their experiences from the International Year for the Rapprochement between Cultures.
