The 7th Meeting of the Management Board of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL), headquartered in Cusco, Peru, was held on November 5-6, 2012, in Caracas, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

This is the first time that this Category II Centre of UNESCO holds a meeting of its Management Board out of its premises. On this occasion, the host entity and co organizer was the Centre for Cultural Diversity headed by Mr. Benito Irady, Deputy Minister of Cultural Identity and Diversity at the Ministry of the People’s Power for Culture in Venezuela, who cordially welcomed all participants.

The Meeting took place parallel to the Latin America Meeting on Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was staged in Caracas, on November 4-7, and featured an extensive plan of activities. Other related actions included consultations with Venezuelan communities and the opening of the exhibition "Guyana: from Georgetown to a Río Esequibo" and the exhibit "Nosotros", organized by the Centre for Cultural Diversity at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Three new States have joined the Board: Uruguay, Mexico and Guatemala. The Meeting was attended by Mr. Fernando Villafuerte, General Director of CRESPIAL, and was presided over by Mrs. Inez Pazmiño, representative of Ecuador to CRESPIAL and secretary of its Management Board. Pazmiño chaired the meeting in the absence of the Bolivian representative, its current chairperson.

The Board discussed the implementation of the projects adopted for the second biennial programme at its previous meeting. Participants recognized the contribution made by CRESPIAL Member States to the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). They also recognized the progress made in CRESPIAL strategic partnerships with other entities, especially with the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Secretariat of the 2003 Convention. They favoured the idea of supporting the UNESCO strategy that seeks to consider culture as a pillar for development.

Among its decisions, the Board elected the Venezuelan cluster as the Board Chair for the next biennium and Uruguay, as its Secretariat. Upon a generous offer by the representative of Mexico, the Board decided to hold its next meeting in this Member State.

Mr. Fernando Brugman, Coordinator of the Culture Programme at the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, represented the Director-General of the Organization at the Meeting. Mr. Brugman indicated that UNESCO is very pleased with the achievements made by CRESPIAL.
