As part of the celebrations held in Cuba on occasion of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, the National Conservation and Restoration Awards conferred each year by the National Cultural Heritage Council of Cuba (CNPC) were presented last 18 April. The solemn occasion, which took place at the José Martí Memorial in the Cuban capital, counted with the presence of His Excellency, Mr. Rafael Bernal Alemany, Minister of Culture, Ms. Gladys Collazo, CNPC President, Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, director of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana (OHCH) and the Network of Offices of the Historian and the Conserver of Heritage Cities of Cuba, and Dr. Miguel Barnet, President of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, among other personalities. UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean was represented by Ms. Tatiana Villegas, the Officer in charge.
The jury, presided over by the head of the OHCH Chair on Vernacular Architecture, architect Daniel Taboada, granted the National Restoration Award to the team of specialists in charge of the works on the emblematic Christ of Havana, while the Baptist Church of Nazareth, in the city of Cienfuegos, received the Conservation Award. The Christ of Havana also received the awards conferred by DOCOMOMO (the international organization for the Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement in architecture) and by the International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS-Cuba, whose president, José A. Fornés, highlighted the rigorous preparatory work and the results of the restoration, which recovered for the Cuban capital an icon of its architectural physiognomy.
During the activity CNPC Vicepresident Arch. Nilson Acosta announced the call for the next edition of the National Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award, which was first granted in the spring of 2012 to Dr. Eusebio Leal. Lastly, the CNPC president inaugurated an exhibition consisting of twenty photographs linked to José Martí’s life and work, in honour of the 160th anniversary of his birth. The exhibition will be shown in all the Cuban provinces.
