Meeting with Libyan Minister of Culture

Tripoli, Libya, 10 November 2013

A meeting is organized with the Libyan Minister of Culture, chiefs of the tourist police, the border police, customs officials to discuss main issues raised during the training, and in particular:

  • in regards to the Heritage police - the creation of a specialized unit within the tourist police and the preparation of a stolen objects database

  • in regards to Customs - these services shall ensure that the required infrastructure and internet connection are in place to be connected to Interpol database and the World Customs Organization (WCO) ARCHEO programme.

Establishment of a working team with the Ministry of Culture, Tripoli, beginning 2014 (dates and place to be confirmed)

A meeting will be organized with judicial authorities and legal advisers from the Department of Antiquities, the Tourist Police, officials of the Ministry of Justice, and a UNESCO expert.

The main objective is the setting-up of a working team within the Ministry of Culture to be trained in legal aspects related to the required law review. 

It shall focus in particular on the drafting of specific articles in the law dealing with illicit traffic, smuggling and robbery of cultural property.
