Second International Conference of Experts on the Return of Cultural Property

Seoul, Republic of Korea, 16-17 October 2012

First held in 2011, this second conference, jointly organized by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA), brought together domestic and international experts, representatives of IGOs and NGOs, and various professionals working in fields related to the return or the restitution of cultural property.

The first day of the Conference examined the practical problems facing the return of cultural property, as well as recent activities involving the return of cultural property in Nigeria, Republic of Korea, and United Kingdom. The second day was devoted to presentations on different approaches to the return of cultural property and methods for resolving disputes, followed by three thematic workshops. Invited to contribute during the session entitled “Methods for resolving disputes”, UNESCO presented the work of the ICPRCP as well as the Rules of Procedure for Mediation and Conciliation.

The Conference concluded with the adoption of the Seoul Recommendation which was based on the highlights of the presentations, discussions of the meeting and suggestions by the experts regarding future international activities and discussions on the return of cultural property.

It has been announced that the 3rd International Conference of Experts would be held in Greece next year, under the co-sponsorship of the government authorities of Greece and the Republic of Korea.
