Icon of Jesus Christ

Eleven (11) icons were stolen from the church of the Saint Nicholas, municipal district of Saint Barbara, Konitsa, Ioannina region (Epirus, North-West Greece). The theft of the icons was found out on 22-8-2018.

Roman coin, Nikopolis ad Istrum (193-211 AD)

Six ancient coins were stolen from a private house in Kallithea, in the suburbs of Athens. The theft took place in 30-07-2016.

October 2017

Theft of seventeen (17) ancient objects from the private collection of Mrs Bonanou Sofia-Aggeliki, at Halandri, Attica, Greece. They are thirteen (13) ancient vases and four (4) terracotta statuettes. The theft took place on August 22, 2017.

Theft of five (5) silver reliquaries stolen from the Monastery of Presentation of Mary in the temple, at Peristerion, Ioannina region, Greece. The theft took place between 11-30 September 2017.

A relief marble slab with the representation of Virgin Mary orant (probably middle-byzantine period) was stolen from the Church of Transfiguration, Vouni, Dirphyon-Messapion Municipality, Euboea, Greece. The theft was found in 15 May 2017.

Theft of sixteen (16) ancient objects from a private collection in Athens, Greece. The exact time of the theft is not known, though it is later than 2009.

Twelve (12) icons were stolen from the church of the Saints Apostles at Molyvdoskepastos, Konitsa, Ioannina region (Epirus, North-West Greece). The theft of icons took place between 19 and 20 January 2017.

Icon of Ascention of Jesus Christ

October 2016

Twelve (12) icons and one (1) cross were stolen/lost from the churches of Saint George, Virgin Mary (Amartou), Saint John, at Kritinia, of Rhodes (Dodecanese – South Creece). The theft became known in Spring 2011.

A Gilded crown (Piece of silver oklad of an icon of 19th century) was stolen from the Church of Zoodohos Peghe (Virgin Mary) at Bochali, Zakynthos (Ionian Islands - West Greece). The theft became known in 28-10-2016.

A clay lamp was stolen/lost from the house of Konstantinos (name) Hartofillis (last name) in Athens, Greece. The theft/loss took place in October 2016. 

August 2016

 

Five (5) items were stolen from the house of Helen Manolessou in Athens, Greece. The theft too place between 2 – 8 August 2016

The objects that were stolen are the following: 

  1. Icon of Baptism, dim. 0,39 X 0,305m Date: 19th century
  2. Icon of the Holy Forty Martyrs, dim 0,39 X 0,305m Date: 1806
  3. Icon of Holy Virgin and Child, Russian, dim 0,325 X 0,29m. Date 19th century
  4. Copper polyptych panel. Russian, dim 0,16 X 0,09m Date: 19th century
  5. “Nomisma histamenon”, a gold coin of the reign of Romanos III Argyros Date: 1028 – 1034

Seventeen (17) icons were stolen from the church of Saint Athanassios at Hioniades, Konitsa, Ioannina region (Epirus, North-West Greece). 

The theft of twelve(12) icons took place on 7-8-2016.The other five(5) icons were, in all probablity, stolen on 2-7-2016.

January 2016

The Ministry of Culture, Education, and Religious Affairs of Greece has informed UNESCO of the following thefts:

One epitrachelion was stolen from the Arsaniou Monastery in the Municipal unit of Arkadi, Municipality of Rethimno, Regional Unit of Rethimno, Region of Crete, Greece Greece. The epitrachelion is embroidered with gold wire on a red silk ground. At the end five fringes of red thread. Bears decoration consisted of vegetal motifs and sewn-on appliqués (a cross and two pairs of seraphim).

The Ministry of Culture, Education, and Religious Affairs of Greece has informed UNESCO of the following thefts that occurred between the 6 and 7 June 2015. ·

A religious icon with the depiction of Saint Laurentius was stolen from the church of the Dormition of Virgin in the village of Palaiopyrgos, municipality of Pogoni, Ioannina, Region of Epirus, Greece.  

A vellum from the Sanctuary Gate with the depiction of Jesus Christ as Great High Priest from the church of the Nativity of Virgin in the village of Meropi, municipality of Pogoni, Ioannina, Region of Epirus, Greece.

Theft of 2 icons from the Monastery of St. Paraskeve, in the village of Ano Pedina, from the municipality of Zagori, Regional Unit of Ioannina, in the Region of Epirus, Greece

Theft of 6 icons from a Monastery of Presentation of Virgin to the Temple from the village in Monastiri, and a reliquary from the church of St Apostles in Aidonoxori, both in Konitsa, the Regional Unit of Ioannina, in the region of Epirus, Greece.

Reliquary

The cover is decorated with floral motifs. At the sides of the casket cherubims are surrounded also by floral motifs while at the front the archangels Michael and Gabriel are depicted frontal and in full - length. In the reliquary four smaller ossuaries are placed with the holy relics of St Ignatius, John the Baptist, St. Onouphrios and an unidentified saint.
