Paintings and artifacts stolen in Guatemala

5 February 2014 - six important paintings and other objects of religious significance were stolen from El Calvario church in La Antigua, a city in the Sacatepéquez region of Guatemala.

The paintings originated from the 18th century and were by the renowned Guatemalan artist Tomás de Merlo.

Abiding by the normal procedures in place in cases of stolen cultural property, the Guatemalan authorities promptly alerted Interpol and UNESCO and issued a press release expressing their concern and condemning the theft of these culturally rich works of art.
