First Day of the Director-General in El Salvador

Upon arrival to San Salvador on 6 May 2013, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met with the Minister of Foreign Relations of El Salvador Mr Hugo Martinez. She met also with Mr Salvador Sanchez Cerén, Vice-President of El Salvador. They had the opportunity to discuss ongoing activities and future plans regarding the Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve.

On the same day, at a ceremony held in the Ministry of External Relations, the Director-General received the “Condecoracion de la Orden Jose Matias Delgado” at the grade of Grand Officer, the highest distinction of the country. In a communique from the Vice-Presidency, Mr Salvador Sanchez Cerén thanked the Director-General for UNESCO’s support in the area of education and in the other spheres of competence of the Organization. The Vice-President reiterated “his country’s appreciation for the Declaration of Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, which represents an example of Central American integration”.

The Director-General also held meetings with Ms Magda Granadino, Secretary of Culture of the Presidency, Mr Franzi Hato Hasbun, Minister of Education and Mr Mario Roberto Nieto Lovo, Rector of the University of El Salvador.

Throughout her visit, the Director-General was accompanied by Ambassador Lorena Sol de Pool, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of El Salvador to UNESCO.
