Hamrokhon Zarifi presented with UNESCO Golden Medal
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova presented the UNESCO Golden Medal in honor of Mevlana Jalaluddin Balkhi Rumi to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Hamrokhon Zarifi for his contribution to the promotion and preservation of the cultural legacy of the Tajik people, notably through his series of books, “The Tajik Golden Heritage”.
The official ceremony was held on 11th of February 2013 at the Organization’s headquarters in the presence of UNESCO senior staff and members of the Tajik delegation, in Paris to attend also the launch of the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation.
Irina Bokova congratulated Hamrokhon Zarifi for his outstanding contribution to promoting Tajik cultural heritage, and for his personal commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the sphere of intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity.
At the start of the ceremony, the Tajik Foreign Minister spoke about the idea guiding “The Tajik Golden Heritage”:
“I wish not only to present to the world with a window onto the ancient and living culture of the Tajiks but also to highlight the exchanges and relations of the Tajik nation with other nations”, declared Hamrokhon Zarifi.
“For example, in one of the books published in Chinese,” said the Foreign Minister, “I described the cultural exchanges between the Tajik and Chinese peoples through the Silk Road. Addressing the European reader – in the books in German and French, I demonstrated our ties through Alexander the Great and other historical personalities.”
