Fourth Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body

©UNESCO. Third meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body at UNESCO Headquarters, April 2012.

The fourth meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body took place at UNESCO Headquarters (Room VI), Paris, on 30 May 2013. It was preceded by an Exchange Day on Underwater Cultural Heritage on 27 May, focusing on the issue of presenting underwater heritage to the general public.

The main issues discussed were:

  1. Education and awareness raising;
  2. Underwater Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development.
  3. Cooperation with accredited NGOs.

An important idea put forward during the Meeting was the creation of a Best Practice List in order to encourage the different national authorities to protect their underwater cultural heritage while making a special effort to provide access. Ten NGOs, officially accredited due to their great importance regarding the dissemination of the ethical principles and practical guidelines enshrined in the 2001 Convention, contributed to the debates as observers. After an extensive debate on education, the Advisory Body recommended to the Meeting of State Parties to invite State Parties to introduce underwater cultural heritage into their school curricula and to train teachers in this regard.
