Saint Lucia - Conference on the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage

The Conference, organized by the UNESCO Kingston Cluster Office for the Caribbean in collaboration with the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO, took place from 27 to 28 March, 2008 in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

Its objectives were to

  • Enhance awareness in Barbados and the OECS Member States (Organization of Eastern Caribbean States) of the importance of ratifying the 2001 Convention,
  • Increase the capacity among countries to deal with issues involved in the ratification process, and
  • Develop an advocacy plan for promoting the ratification of the Convention in the Caribbean.

Representatives of Barbados, British Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia participated in this reunion, which was a direct follow-up to the meeting held in Quito, Ecuador in November, 2007. The participants concurred unanimously with the Position Paper, issued as a result of the Quito meeting and endorsing the 2001 Convention calling for its prompt ratification.

The participants of the St. Lucia meeting decided furthermore to prepare, assisted by UNESCO, a model legislation for the protection of the cultural heritage for the Carribean States
