UNESCO will organize the fourth regional meeting for Africa on the protection of the underwater cultural heritage in Grand-Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire
From 20 to 23 June 2017, UNESCO will organize jointly with the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire the fourth regional meeting for Africa on the protection of the underwater cultural heritage. The meeting will be held in Grand-Bassam (Côte d'Ivoire).
The meeting will emphasize the importance of ratifying the 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage for African Countries, seek to enhance capacity to undertake actions concerning this heritage and highlight its potential for tourism, while facilitating collaboration among the different African countries. The aim is to strengthen the progress made since the first meeting in 2007 and to promote a common understanding and approach among countries.
During the meeting, international experts in the fields of cultural heritage law and underwater archeology will make presentations on selected themes. Presentations will be given for example on underwater heritage in the African region, protection of underwater heritage and international cooperation. A round table on the status of underwater heritage in the participating countries will also be organized.
