Improving sub-regional coordination between UN and the African Union
UNESCO Dakar is participating in a 2-day high-level meeting on the creation of a sub-regional coordination mechanism for West and Central Africa.
The meeting takes place on 5-6 October 2011 in Dakar, Senegal and will bring together participants from a long list of UN agencies operating in West and Central Africa, as well as representatives from the African Union and its new partnership for Africa’s development programme (NEPAD).
The new sub-regional coordination mechanism is an off-shoot of the UN regional coordination mechanism (RCM).
The meeting will take stock of the 10-Year Capacity Building Programme for the African Union and discuss the importance of partnerships with the UN bodies to deliver on the NEPAD Programme.
It will build on the experiences of the sub-regional UN coordinating mechanism in Eastern and Southern Africa that has already been launched.
Presentations also include lessons learned from existing UN coordinating practices at national and regional levels, for example UN joint efforts when faced with a humanitarian crises such as the recent one in Cote d’Ivoire.
