The University of the East, in cooperation with UNESCO Jakarta, held a Steering Committee and Team Working Group meeting to review facilitator’s manuals on Comprehensive Sexuality Education addressing HIV, Drugs and sexual risk behaviors of Filipino youths in closed settings. The meeting was held to introduce the manuals as one of the outputs of UNESCO’s project in cooperation with the University of the East.
The traditional meeting ceremony began with an opening prayer by Rev. Fr. Bernard Martin. Welcome remark was given by Dr. Ester A. Garcia, President of the University of the East and the opening remarks was delivered by Dr. Mee Young Choi, Programme Specialist in Education/Team Leader, HIV/AIDS, UNESCO Jakarta.
During the meeting, UNESCO HIV/AIDS officer Grace Halim outlined that the project was undertaken as part of UNESCO’s program to implement the International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education, which is in-line with the enactment of the Philippines’ Reproductive Health Law last December, to provide a complete and accurate and relevant age and development, appropriate information and education on reproductive health and sexuality through different approaches. The manual’s framework and instructional design was presented by Dr. Evelina M. Vicencio, Project Leader and Dean of the UE College of Education. A variety of activities was used to introduce the topics to youth in closed setting centers, including story-telling, singing and dancing, as well as games and personal promises.
Undersecretary Muyot of the Legal and Legislative Office of the Department of Education closed the meeting by pointing out the import role of education in protecting children so that they can make the right decisions. He called this his ‘dream project’ and noted that he hopes the final manuals will aid the Department of Social Welfare and Development to deliver sexuality education for youth in closed setting centers. UNESCO will next present the manuals to stakeholders in a workshop held in Bali, Indonesia, on 30-31 May 2013.
