Conference on 'RURAL VOICES: Upholding Freedom of Expression through Mainstream and Alternative Media'
UNESCO New Delhi, the Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) – a not-for-profit organisation working for rural development, and the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) are organizing a national conference on the theme ‘Rural Voices: Upholding Freedom of Expression through Mainstream and Alternative Media’, to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2013.
The event is scheduled to be held at the UN Conference Hall at 55 Lodhi Estate, New Delhi on Friday, May 3, 2013. The conference is being organized with the objective of promoting voices of communities having limited space in the mainstream media. It will also highlight the importance of media freedom to development and rural empowerment, and will reflect on the ways in which the media could help transform lives in the country’s rural and less accessible areas.
The event will include:
- An inaugural keynote address
- The launch of the 11th Annual Press Freedom Report for South Asia 2012–13, produced by UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists
- Two panel discussions on the themes: (i) Media Responsibility for Public Interest; and (ii) Community Media: Our World, Our Voice, Our MediaAn open house Interaction
