Correios holds 42º International Letter-Writing Competition
On 1 February registration begins for the 42nd International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and held by Correios in Brazil. This competition aims at developing the ability to write, expanding creative thinking and awakening a taste for writing in young people.
To celebrate the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013 coordinated by UNESCO, the theme of the competition is “Write someone a letter explaining why water is such a precious resource.” Students up to 15 years old may participate through their public or private school. Registrations are welcome until 15 March 2013.
The letters must be handwritten in Portuguese using blue or black ink ballpoint pen, with up to 800 words in letter format. In order to participate, the student must undergo a selection process at his or her school. Each school will choose and register a maximum of two letters to represent them.
Prizes — The competition will have two phases: state and national. In the state phase, the three top letters chosen by each Correios Regional Directory will receive prizes. First place will receive a tablet; second and third will get a digital camera. In the national phase, in which the jury comprises representatives of the Ministries of Education, of Communications, and of Environment, as well as of UNESCO, UnB and Correios, the winner will get a LED 32-inch TV and a trophy, and his or her letter will represent Brazil at the international level that will take place in Berne, Switzerland, held by UPU.
In 2012, there were 2685 participants from public and private schools from all over Brazil. Joyce Lima Moreno, from Bahia, was the national winner and received one of the five honorable mentions given by the international jury. In that scenario, Brazil is the ranks second in number of wins, with 3 gold medals, losing only to China, which has five.
