Lucien Muñoz congratulates Frei Betto for receiving UNESCO award
UNESCO Brasilia Office Director, Lucien Muñoz, sent a letter to the Brazilian Dominican friar, Frei Betto, congratulating him for receiving the José Martí 2013 Award for his decisive contribution to a culture of peace, justice and respect to human rights in Latin America.
The award was handed over to Frei Betto by the UNESCO Deputy Director-General, María del Pilar Álvarez, during the Third International Conference on World Balance that happened in Havana (Cuba) between 28 and 30 January.
In his letter to Frei Betto, also addressed to the Minister of the Secretariat of Human Rights at the Presidency of the Republic, Maria do Rosário Nunes, Muñoz highlights: “UNESCO has the conviction that his courage and efforts towards solidarity and social justice in the region are important testimonials that it is still possible to build a society with more brotherhood and less inequality in our continent.”
Frei Betto has dedicated the award especially to the 234 young men and women, who perished on Sunday at the Kiss nightclub fire, in Santa Maria (Brazil), for whom he requested one minute of silence.
