Mediatheque of Cuban Women Filmmakers meets for the first time in July
On 28 July, Havana’s Fresa y Chocolate Cultural Centre will welcome the first meeting of the Sara Gómez Mediatheque of Cuban Women Filmmakers (MMRC). The event will provide an opportunity to present the Mediatheque’s work strategies, as well as its main results.
This initiative of the Cuban Institute of Film Art and Industry (ICAIC) is sponsored by the UNESCO Office in Havana, in the framework of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and the global priority for gender equality.
The MMRC is a non-profit-making organization targeting the preservation, dissemination and creation of the audiovisual legacy of women filmmakers in Cuba and its diaspora. The Mediatheque includes among its goals the management of support and funds for the development of audiovisual projects by Cuban women filmmakers thereby contributing to gender equality and equal access to existing filmmaking resources.
The Mediatheque was inaugurated in 2013 and last March it was launched internationally in the United States in the framework of the First International Cuban Women Filmmakers Showcase. It was named in honour of the outstanding filmmaker Sara Gómez, the first Cuban woman to direct a fiction feature-length film.
