Teacher training workshop

 

Within UNESCO’s mandate to encourage member states and teacher education providers to use an integrated approach to teacher preparation; and to assist member states to develop strategies in teacher induction and ensure that professional development is ongoing and available; UNESCO Doha office in cooperation with Cairo office held a teacher training workshop in Cairo, 27-29 November 2006. Representatives from Ministries of Education of all GCC countries (in addition to Egypt, Yemen, Sudan and Arab Bureau for Education in the Gulf) participated.

Objectives

- Review status of Teacher training programs and the Social and Economic status of Teachers in some of the Arab Countries
- Propose Mechanisms for ongoing development of teacher training programs and improving the status of teachers

- In-service Teacher training assessed and recommendations put forth
- The socio Economic status of Teachers discussed
- General Enhancement and Development of teacher training programs

Strategy

Following up with UNESCO’s mandate, and as a continuation of the previous efforts, UNESCO Doha office will be hosting a sub-regional symposium to discuss the inconsistency between the required skills and the ongoing training programs. This activity will target teacher training institutions/ education faculties as well as ministries of Education, teacher trainers and planners at the Cluster countries. Participants from Qatar, Oman, Yemen, KSA, UAE, Kuwait & Bahrain will be expected to attend.

The symposium will address the following:

- Review and discuss teacher training programs in GCC countries
- Review the required skills and criterion for qualified teachers
- Inconsistencies in following up with recommendations and plans that have been set in Nov 2006
- International trends in teacher education
- Professional standards and the way forward
- Proposals on the way forward on how to activate the guidelines of performance standards for Arab teachers through several programs and activities

Timing and Venue

It was held on 20-21 June 2011 in Doha - Qatar.

Participants

Two participants from each member state in addition to a number from the host country, as well as UNESCO consultants. Each country will be represented by Ministry of Education representative in teacher training department (preferably one who attended the previous Teacher Training workshop in Cairo in 2006). Each country is to provide a working document/report on their achievements in updating teacher training programs to date and the challenges faced to be discussed in the 2-day symposium.
