A new stage for the Teaching Respect for All: From policy to practice
Launched last January, the project Teaching Respect for All (TRA) promoting anti-discrimination through education, continues to develop.
In partnership with the Centre of Human Rights Education (ZMRB) at University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland in Lucerne, UNESCO is mapping policies and innovative educational responses implemented by Ministries of Education, schools, and cities in different regions of the world…
Educational responses will be identified and promoted to develop learners’ knowledge and understanding, attitudes, and other competencies which are fundamental to counter hatred, prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination and bullying.
The results of the mapping will be published on online later this year, with the lessons learnt from the collected materials and practices. The objective is to build the evidence base for effective educational programmes in this field.
The Advisory Group was set up to provide guidance for the development of the TRA materials and activities. The first meeting took place at UNESCO HQ on 18-19 April 2012 and was attended by the following experts:
Ms Sheila Aikman, Senior Lecturer in Education and Development, University of East Anglia; Ms Eliane dos Santos Cavalleiro, Faculty of Education at the University of Brasilia, Chairperson of the Brazilian Association of Black Researchers; Ms Monique Fouilhoux, Education International; Mr Seung-hwan Lee, Director, Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU); Mr Augustine Omare-Okurut, Secretary-General, Uganda National Commission for UNESCO; Mr Mutuma Ruteere, UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance; Mr Refaat Sabbah, Chair of the Arab Network for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (ANHRE); Ms Marie-Louise Samuels, Chief Director, Curriculum Implementation and Monitoring, Department of Basic Education; Mr Derald Wing Sue, Professor of psychology and education, Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology, Teachers College, Columbia University; Ms Natalia Voskresenskaya, Vice-President, Russian Association for Civic Education, Program Director, Civitas Foundation.
The project looks into the education responses provided also at the local level. Mr Bernard Isach representing the City of Toulouse (France) has joined the discussion and presented Toulouse’s engagement in fighting racism through education. The city of Toulouse currently assures the presidency function of the European Coalition of Cites against Racism, launched by UNESCO in 2005.
The experts clarified the typologies of “Teaching Respect for All”, as well as defined the approach and methodology for developing related activities, including the development of teaching and learning materials, policy development support materials, and online forums targeting education professionals and young people.
The Advisory Group will meet again in Autumn 2012.
