Director-General strongly condemns deadly attack on school in Syria
Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, today strongly condemned the shelling of the Batiha school in the Al Wafidin camp, near Damascus, Syria, which left a number of students dead, according to media reports. The Al Wafidin camp is home to about 25,000 displaced people.
“I am deeply shocked by the violence of this attack on students in their place of learning,” said the Director-General. “Schools must provide children with a secure environment. Attacks on educational establishments are a denial of the right to education and must be roundly condemned.”
“UNESCO is committed to protecting education in all circumstances. Shells and guns cannot be allowed to destroy the right to learn,” concluded Ms Bokova. “I call on all parties in the ongoing conflict to uphold this basic right and renounce the targeting of educational institutions.”
