Final preparations before literacy project takes off in Senegal

Under the slogan "Re-write the future", the UNESCO/Procter & Gamble project is in its final phrase of preparation before starting literacy classes for girls and women in Senegal. The project is slated to start in early April 2012.

The goal is to educate 10,000 girls and women aged between 15 to 55 in seven regions of Senegal (Dakar, Diourbel, Fatick, Kédougou, Matam, Tambacounda and St. Louis) over a period of two years.

A wide range of partners

During a meeting in Saly (Senegal) from 7 to 10 March 2012, government officials, representatives of UNESCO-Dakar and civil society involved in the project, as well as the private sector gathered to discuss the final project documents.

Participants discussed the content of the training modules, as well as issues related to logistics, administrative and financial needs of the project.

Same wavelength

"We reviewed and finalized the modules and training plans, approved the budget and defined roles and responsibilities of each player," says Rokhaya Diawara, responsible for the project at UNESCO Dakar. "Now we have an agreed timetable for the first six months of implementation, which will allow us to monitor the quality of actions taken," she adds.

Diawara underlines that all stakeholders are now all on the same wavelength. "This is important to guarantee the success of the project,” she says.

International mission

Next step is to finalize and sign contracts with stakeholders, initiate the procedure for disbursement of funds and start training in April.

An international mission led by UNESCO will visit various learning sites in the seven regions in mid-May.

The project aims to increase functional literacy skills, increase the incomes of these girls/women as well as inform them of reproductive health. After 24 months, it is planned that these girls and women are literate in local languages ​​and/or French.

Broaden the scope

Besides the traditional methods of literacy, the project offers literacy programmes based on ICT, an innovative initiative that enhances and amplifies the impact of the project.

The project hence aims to reach additional 30,000 girls and women through the mobile and online courses
