Freedom of expression and journalism education on agenda of 4th UNAOC Forum in Doha
Freedom of expression, journalism education and youth communications will be addressed by UNESCO at the 4th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Doha, Qatar, from 11 to 13 December 2011. Guy Berger, UNESCO’s Director of the Division for Freedom of Expression and Media Development (FEM) will attend the Forum sessions on media development, reporting and educating youth.
UNESCO’s FEM has done extensive work in communications policy in post-conflict countries, in boosting journalism training worldwide, and in developing media and information literacy amongst young people. At the 4th UNAOC Forum in Doha UNESCO’s Guy Berger will speak at three subsequent sessions:
- Media development in a time of transition;
- Reporting and training across cultural divides;
- Educating youth for dialogue, reconciliation and peace.
The UN Alliance of Civilization, established in 2005, aims to improve understanding and relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions. The Doha Forum will be held under the theme “Intercultural Dialogue to boost Development”. About 2000 participants, representing governments, private sector, civil society, youth, journalists, academics, intercultural and religious organizations, are expected to produce a results-oriented set of recommendations, by proposing a comprehensive roadmap and by designing monitoring and impact assessment tools. UNESCO’s Director General, Irina Bokova, will lead a discussion on “The Role of Education for Sustainable Development”.
