International Literacy Day goes galactic
International Literacy Day was celebrated world-wide on 8 September, including in space. A ‘Galactic' Literacy Day Celebration featured a video message from astronauts at the International Space Station, encouraging world leaders to continue efforts to improve literacy rates. The joint initiative came from USAID, the EFA Fast Track Initiative – of which UNESCO is a member – and the Brookings Centre.
At a ceremony in New Delhi, India, UNESCO awarded the international literacy prizes to projects in Burundi, Mexico, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United States of America. Also in New Delhi, an international conference on Women’s Literacy for Inclusive and Sustainable Development is being organized by UNESCO’s E9 initiative, from 8 to 10 September.
