Preparing learners for the challenge of the 21st Century: UNESCO Forum on Global Citizenship Education

UNESCO will hold an international Forum on Global Citizenship Education (GCE) in Bangkok, Thailand on 2 – 4 December 2013.

Jointly organized by Division of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development at HQ, UNESCO Office in Bangkok – Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) and Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) in support of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative, the Forum will gather a large group of stakeholders, including policy makers, GCE experts, educational practitioners, civil society organizations, young people, and media from all regions of the world.

The overall objective of the Forum is to provide participants with the opportunity to share and exchange their experiences and ideas on the innovation to promote global citizenship education (GCE) and identify concrete actions to be taken at the national, regional and global levels to foster global citizenship through education.

Global citizenship education exemplifies education’s transformative power and aims to make sure that learners gain the skills and values they need to cooperate in resolving the interconnected challenges of the 21st century (for more information, “Global Citizenship Education An Emerging Perspective” .

The Forum is organized around two plenary debates and 14 concurrent sessions.

The first plenary debate will explore how the principles of solidarity and competitiveness can co-exist in education and support global citizenship education. How to nurture the commitment to international solidarity while preparing learners to enter the world of work in an era of globalization? 

The second plenary debate will discuss how to promote GCE. In this session, participants will examine contemporary trends and events as opportunities for fostering global citizenship and critically reviewing educational practices. 

The 14 concurrent sessions address issues such as innovative approaches to teacher education on GCE, learning to live together through GCE, and the connections between GCE, peace building and conflict prevention, ESD and sexuality education.

One of the sessions will specifically target youth attendees and discuss how social media can help promote global citizenship and support youth networking.
