Running for Girls’ Education: UNESCO Signs Agreement with the Hellenic Athletics Federation
Funds raised during the Athens Classic Marathon next 13 November 2011 in the Greek capital will benefit UNECO’s programmes in favour of girls’ education in Africa, following an agreement signed by the Director-General Irina Bokova with the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) on 20 June 2011.
“This agreement opens new horizons in our excellent cooperation with Greece,” said Irina Bokova, thanking the Federation’s Vice-President Mr Ioannis Stamatopoulos its Secretary-General Panagiotis Dimakos, as well as Mr Théodore Passas, Permanent Delegate of the Hellenic Republic to UNESCO, and the President of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, Ms Ekaterini Tzizikosta. “But it is also a very symbolic agreement. The Athens Classical Marathon is much more than a simple competition. It is part of our heritage, culture and history, and promotes values of resilience, persistence, solidarity, friendship and understanding.”
In 2010, some 20,000 runners participated in the Athens Classic Marathon, which has been organized annually for the past 28 years by the Hellenic Athletics Federation. The amount collected by the event is granted each year to charitable causes. The Foundation expressed hope that his agreement would pave the way for collaboration with other marathon events worldwide.
