Student videoconference celebrates abolition of slavery
‘Women and Slavery’ is the theme of the Seventh Annual Global Student Videoconference which linked students from UNESCO Associated schools in Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil and the United States with other students at UN Headquarters on Friday 19th March.
This live interactive forum, for students aged 15 through to 18 years old, commemorates the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade which falls on 25 March.
The event paid tribute to the many enslaved women who endured unbearable hardships and fought for freedom from slavery and advocated for its abolition. The theme also celebrated the strength of enslaved women, many of whom succeeded in transmitting their African culture to their descendants despite the many abuses that they had to endure.
During the videoconference students presented stories from their classroom resources or from their own research on the theme using theatrical re-enactments, poetry, music, statements and readings from historical texts. They also interacted and asked questions about what had been presented.
