Young women from School to Work : a national seminar at UNESCO Beirut
Within the framework of the project ‘Supporting Gender Equality in Education in Lebanon’ funded by the Government of Italy and in partnership with the Information International, UNESCO Beirut office developed a field and qualitative research methodology and tested it with a small scale population in Lebanon in 2011. In a national seminar organized on May 11, 2012, findings of the research on the challenges faced by young female students in first job seeking and preliminary policy directions were shared and discussed among participants from academia, ministries, university career guidance centers and private sector.
Limited access to decent work is one of the major causes of youth marginalization in the Arab States. Young women tend to be more disadvantaged in terms of access to work, and career development and diversity.
The present qualitative field research covers 80 young female fresh graduates from 5 universities in Beirut (Lebanese American University, University of Saint Joseph, Lebanese University, Beirut Arab Universities, American University for Sciences and Technology). Its findings lead to provide preliminary policy recommendations for a more diversified and smoother school to work transition for female university graduates.
The study provides a qualitative approach which can be replicated to address specific types of marginalization (region, schooling levels, disciplines…) in Lebanon (outside Beirut) and in other countries of the Arab region.
