For a definition of what "Recognized Higher Education Institution" means in Armenia: A recognized higher education institution in the Republic of Armenia (RA) is an institution, which offers higher education programmes, defined by the RA Government Decree, and is established by the state or is accredited by the competent body.

Currently there are 22 State Higher Education Institutions with 14 branches operating in the Republic of Armenia. Also there are 4 universities established within the intergovernmental agreements with state participation. In addition, there are 40 private HEIs, of which 31 have passed full accreditation. Bachelor's degrees take 3-4 years (180-240ECTS), and Master's degrees another 1-2 years (60-120 ECTS) based on the Bachelor’s degree. Higher education is provided by many types of institutions (university, academy, institution, and conservatory).
