CHE is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal, established by an Act of Parliament, the Universities Act (Cap.210B) of 1985:

The Commission for Higher Education is mandated (http://www.che.or.ke/mandate.html) to make better provisions for the advancement of University education in Kenya and for connected purposes including foreign credential assessment and recognition convention.

Definition of "Recognized Higher Education Institution" in Kenya:

For purposes of the UNESCO Portal on Higher Education Institutions, recognized higher education institutions refer to:

1. Public universities established through Acts of Parliament;

2. Private universities established through charters by the Commission for Higher Education;

3. Post secondary school institutions authorized by the Commission for Higher Education to offer degree programmes in collaboration with local universities (1 and 2 above) or private universities.
