In many regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, HIV and AIDS have a negative impact on the teacher workforce, creating teacher shortages, absenteeism and new challenges which teachers have to face in supporting orphans, or children tending sick family members.  Educator support is an essential component of the education sector response to the pandemic.

UNESCO works in key areas related to teachers, from workplace policies in educational institutions to curriculum materials for classroom teaching.
