Despite a great number of teacher development initiatives in Africa (such as UNESCO’s Teacher Training Initiative for Sub-Saharan Africa), the shortage of motivated, qualified teachers in the region remains a formidable challenge.

Organized by UNESCO Dakar, the Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education And Development (Lome, Togo, 13-15 April) is to address teacher professional development within a reformed educational system in Africa. The aim of the conference is to provide guidance to governments and stress the importance of building strong partnerships across a wide spectrum of stakeholders to successfully implement teacher development policies and activities in Africa.
