Global Action Week for Education: Raising awareness for quality education in Africa
Under the slogan "Every child needs a teacher", Global Action Week for Education will be celebrated all over the world from 21-27 April 2013.
For its countries of representation (Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal), UNESCO’s Regional Office in Dakar in collaboration with the National Commissions for UNESCO has assisted national EFA coalitions or national committees specially set up for this event to engage in strong advocacy and awareness campaigns.
The activities planned during the week will take several forms including conferences, testimonies, documentary film production and distribution, radio broadcasts, and radio contests with prizes . ANCEFA (Africa Network Campaign on Education For All) is particularly involved, especially in Senegal.
The aim is to raise awareness and involve stakeholders in education, the educational community, NGOs and the public in order to strengthen efforts in this domain.
“It is crucial," says Jean Adotevi, Head of Education at UNESCO Dakar, "that education stakeholders, the community and individuals engage together so that, free from illiteracy and obscurantism, the continent can move forward on the path of sustainable development.”
Qualified teachers for quality education
"There can be no education without teachers and also no quality education without qualified teachers," adds Adotevi. It is estimated that sub-Saharan Africa currently needs a million new teachers. In addition, there is an urgent need to provide training opportunities for millions of teachers who have little education themselves". UNESCO Dakar works to resolve this teacher issue in all its dimensions (teacher training, status, social security, salaries, professional development of teachers, etc..).
Every year since 2001
The primary objective of the Global Campaign for Education is to bring the issue of education on the front of the stage. The campaign has been organized every year since 2001, the year that followed the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal.
