International “Patrimonito” storyboard contest to promote World Heritage Education
A new international competition invites young people to create a storyboard for the animated DVD series “Patrimonito's World Heritage Adventures”. Launched by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in collaboration with the UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet), the 2010 competition focuses on the links between World Heritage and communities, sustainable tourism, sustainable development and biodiversity.
All of the 187 countries that signed the World Heritage Convention are invited to participate. Each storyboard should be submitted to the participant's National Commission before 15 December 2010. The final selection will be made in UNESCO in early 2011.
The Patrimonito World Heritage Adventures project consists of, so far, a series of eight short films introducing the cartoon character of Patrimonito. Each episode is developed from storyboards designed by young people. Patrimonito helps children learn about a particular World Heritage site and the challenges it faces, proposing a solution to help preserve the site. The series was launched in 2002 within the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme. These DVDs are intended to mobilize young people to participate actively in World Heritage preservation. The competition allows young people in schools and youth organizations to build critical thinking skills about heritage conservation in their own country as well as to transmit their message to their peers around the world.
