The scope of the DESD is broad and its potential effects are far-reaching. The DESD aims to reorient education towards sustainability, which in turn has the potential to impact the way people think. For this reason it is important to look at ways in which one can effectively monitor progress and capture learning in the process of implementation. Given the wide scope of ESD, both quantitative as well as qualitative data are important in monitoring and evaluating the Decade.

Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is one of the seven implementation strategies enshrined in the International Implementation Scheme (IIS). The M&E strategy underscores the importance of developing adequate and relevant indicators at all levels – local, national and international – and for each initiative and programme within the framework of the Decade.

Learning for a Sustainable World: DESD M&E Report series

The “Learning for a Sustainable World” DESD M&E report series will be published during the life of the Decade in 2009, in 2012 and in 2014. The reports correspond to the DESD M&E phases. A well-defined monitoring and evaluation process that includes relevant methodologies and indicators is the basis for the development of the DESD M&E reports.
