UNESCO in alliance to protect education from attack
The official launch of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack is taking place on 21 June at the UN, New York. This event will present the coalition to all who work to defend education and address the impact of attacks on students, education systems and development.
Led by a seven-member steering committee which includes UNESCO, the Coalition was formed in 2010 to highlight the incidence and impact of targeted attacks on education in conflict-affected situations. It aims to strengthen monitoring and reporting systems, promote effective programmatic responses, encourage adherence to international law, and increase accountability for attacks.
The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack plans to advocate for the expansion of the UN Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism to include attacks on schools and hospitals.
