Presentation of Russian Holocaust Essay Laureates

The sixth annual presentation of the Russian Holocaust Essay Laureates was held at UNESCO Headquarters on 8 July.

Co-organized by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre-Europe, Association Verbe et Lumière-Vigilance and the Russian Holocaust Foundation, the event recognized the work of five students, whose essays had been selected from over 1,000 submissions.

UNESCO’s Deputy Director-General, Mr Getachew Engida, opened the proceedings. He emphasized the importance of learning about the Holocaust in order to prevent future atrocities.  

International lawyer and Holocaust survivor, Mr Samuel Pisar, gave a speech on “Remembrance with Hindsight and Foresight”. 

The ceremony was attended by the Ambassadors of the Russian Federation, the United States of America and Israel. Other participants included UNESCO’s Director for the Division of Higher Education, Mr Georges Haddad, Newsweek Bureau Chief, Mr Christopher Dickey, the co-chair of the Russian Holocaust Foundation in Moscow, Mr Ilya Altman, Verbe et Lumière-Viligance Board member Mr Alexandre Kaplan, and the President of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre-France, Mr Richard Odier. Mr Shimon Samuels, the Centre’s Director for International Relations, thanked UNESCO and special Advisor Graciela Vaserman Samuels for organizing the event.
