World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education to address Education of Roma children

As many as 50 per cent of Roma children in Europe fail to complete primary education. This issue is one of many to be addressed at the first-ever World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to be held in Moscow from 27-29 September.

Five regional ECCE reports were prepared for the conference, which is organised by UNESCO, the Russian Federation and the City of Moscow.

“As the first global meeting around the cause of children under seven, it is a truly landmark occasion”, says UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, who will open the event with Eleonora Mitrofanova, Chairperson of UNESCO’s Executive Board, and UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, Qian Tang. 

ECCE is the bedrock of Education for All and widely considered the first step in meeting all the other EFA goals. As well as raising awareness of its vital importance,  the Conference aims to reaffirm ECCE as a right for all children and as the basis for development. It also plans to review global progress in ECCE and set standards and targets in for 2015 and beyond. 

Over 120 countries will be represented by some 750 participants at the Conference, including Heads of State, government ministers and experts in the field. 

Keynote speakers include American economist Jeffrey Sachs (by video) who will present the investment and productivity argument for ECCE, Jack Shonkoff, professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Chair of the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child in the United States, who will speak on brain research and child development, and Danny Faure, Vice-President of the Seychelles.
