Future Directions of the Academic Ranking of World Universities

Global university rankings have been attracting attentions from all over the world. Although there are many methodological and technical limitations in rankings themselves and various problems in using rankings, global university rankings are useful in a variety of ways and will be here to stay. Therefore, the key questions are that the rankers should continuously improve their rankings and the users should wisely utilise rankings. As the first multi-indicator global university ranking, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been improving ever since its publication in June 2003. In addition to its annual update of existing rankings with stable methodologies for each ranking, the future directions of ARWU include: improving ranking methodologies to reduce limitations, diversifying rankings to better serve the needs of different users, profiling research universities to provide more specific comparison of institutions, contributing to the health development of ranking culture through theoretical research and professional involvement
