Textbooks can be powerful tools for educating responsible and caring citizens who are open to other cultures, respect human dignity and have the skills to bring about sustainable development.
UNESCO supports countries in developing textbooks that promote peace, non-violence, human rights and dialogue among peoples taking into account formal and non-formal education, and teacher training. Aware of the need to improve access to quality textbooks and learning materials in languages understood by learners, the Organization also encourages local stakeholders to support national publishing capacities.
UNESCO strategy is to develop guidelines/materials to help countries establish policies that enhance quality for the content and design of all materials used in education, including new technologies.
These policies aim to improve classroom materials that help teachers cultivate the values and skills for learning to live together.
