#WhatIsSDG4 Campaign

2016 marks the first year of action for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which comprises of 17 Goals (SDGs) including a Goal (SDG4) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030. Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals by UN Member States in September 2015, governments and the international education community stand ready to fulfil their promises.

On 16 February 2016, GEFI launched the #WhatIsSDG4 social media campaign, to raise greater public awareness of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 and its 10 targets in order to advocate for #Education First!

The call is urgent. 124 million children and youth are still out of school, disproportionately affecting those in countries affected by conflict; 250 million children lack basic skills, over half of whom have spent four years in education, and 757 million adults, two thirds of whom are women, cannot read or write. Even after an increase in domestic resources is taken into account, there is still an annual financing gap of US $39 billion to provide 12 years of free education to all children and adolescents in developing countries. Filling this gap would require a 600% increase in donor aid.

SDG4 reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most powerful and transformative tools to achieve sustainable development. To Ensure Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education and Promote Lifelong Learning Opportunities for All by 2030 ‪SDG4 has 10 targets to stimulate action across governments, UN system, civil society, NGOs, local communities, and global citizens. These 10 targets, range  from the completion of free primary and secondary schooling for all by 2030, to the elimination of gender and income disparities in education, equal access to affordable vocational training, and universal access to quality higher education.

The Global Education First Initiative’s #WhatIsSDG4 social media advocacy campaign will expand on each of the 10 Targets of SDG4, starting with #SDG4T1 to promote change among governments, donor countries, specialized agencies, institutions and even individuals. Through the #WhatIsSDG4 advocacy campaign, GEFI aims to build momentum around not only on the education goal but the 2030 Agenda as a whole to mobilize young people and civil society at large around shared goals for a common humanity.
