3 May 2017 - World Press Freedom Day discussion on “Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies”

Every year, 3 May is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. The international day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991.

In celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2017, the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva and the UNESCO Geneva Liaison Office, with the support of co-sponsoring Member States, will organise a Panel Discussion on the theme of “the media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies”.

The participation of eminent speakers, including journalists and media professionals, aims at stimulating an interactive discussion and provides a timely opportunity to explore the following critical themes:

  • Justice for all as a prerequisite for freedom of expression and sustainable development
  • Freedom of expression and freedom of information in fostering more inclusive societies
  • Safety of journalists and media freedom as a means of ensuring public access to information

The event also builds upon the Windhoek Declaration on press freedom, independent and pluralistic media and freedom of expression.
