Herman Makarenko, the renowned Ukrainian conductor, was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace in November 2016. This title was bestowed upon him in recognition of his commitment to promoting music as a vehicle for dialogue and mutual understanding among people, and his contribution towards peace and tolerance, notably through the performances of the Kyiv-Classic Orchestra.

In his capacity as Artistic Director of the Kyiv-Classic Orchestra, he launched the project “Concert Premier”, aiming to present to the Ukrainian audience classical and traditional music of the world.

In 2015, he performed a concert entitled “Music for Peace Concert” in Ukraine, celebrating the 70th anniversary of UNESCO.

In his capacity as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, Mr Makarenko supports UNESCO’s work in line with the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures.

In October 2017, he contributed to the success of the Charitable Viennese Ball in Kyiv, which was held under the auspices of UNESCO. This event aimed to strengthen cultural dialogue in Europe and across the world. The Fund collected at the event were directed to the Center for Social Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities in Kyiv.
