Sumi Jo

The world-renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace in April 2003, in recognition of her unfailing commitment to the promotion and the understanding of Korean culture all over the world, in particular through her support for the “Living Human Treasures” initiative.

Launched in 1993, this programme purpose is to preserve the knowledge and skills necessary for the performing of intangible cultural heritage elements with high historical, artistic or cultural value. In addition, the initiative encourages younger people to learn and acquire the knowledge required for the re-creation of elements of the intangible cultural heritage.

In her capacity as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, she contributed to the success of the “Sumi-Jo KNCU Charity Concert for Education, held in September 2016 in Icheon City, Republic of Korea. This event, co-organized by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, aimed at improving education in sub-Saharan and Asian countries.
