Maestro Valery Gergiev, UNESCO Artist for Peace

Valery Guerguiev, one of the world’s most renowned conductors, was appointed UNESCO Artist for Peace through Dialogue between Cultures and Civilizations in March 2003. This title was bestowed upon him in recognition of his commitment to the preservation of peace and cultural identities, and his contribution, as Director of the Mariinsky Theater of Saint Petersburg, to the preservation of opera and ballet.

In his capacity as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, he supports UNESCO’s activities and promotes, through music, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace. In addition, he supports the activities undertaken by the World Orchestra for Peace, designated as a UNESCO Artist for Peace in August 2010.

In October 2004, he organized a Charity Gala at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris for the benefit of the children of Belsan. This event, placed under the patronage of UNESCO, gathered eminent personalities from across the world including Former First Lady Bernadette Chirac.
