Maha El-Khalil Chalabi, a strong advocate for heritage, was designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in February 2016, in recognition of her commitment to the "League of Canaanite, Phoenician and Punic Cities", including through the International Association to Save Tyre (AIST) and the Tyre Foundation.

As Secretary-General of the International Association to Save Tyre, she seeks to promote internationally and safeguard the city of Tyre, inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984.

Created in 2009, the "League of Canaanite, Phoenician and Punic Cities" is a network of cities designed to strengthen cooperation and dialogue between the peoples of the Mediterranean around crucial issues relating to heritage and cultural diversity.

In her capacity as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Ms Chalabi organized in September 2017 a Forum entitled "History, a Source of Solutions to the Problems of the Mediterranean" which was held at the Sursok Museum in Beirut. The opening of the Crafts Village in Tyre called «The Tyre Workshops» followed the event.
