Gilberto Gil promotes cultural diversity

On the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on 21 May, Artist for Peace Gilberto Gil and Goodwill Ambassadors Nizan Guanaes and Oskar Metsavaht joined the Be the One campaign in Brazil

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated every year on the 21 May, reminds us the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions ratified by the Organization in 2005, which recognizes cultural diversity as part of the common heritage of humanity, and as a driving force for peace and prosperity.

On that occasion, Audrey Azoulay,  Director-General of UNESCO, said the following “Although COVID-19 has not succeeded in curbing dialogue among cultures, the long term consequences of the crisis, especially in economic terms, might inflict severe damage on diversity […]We must therefore protect diversity without delay before it is too late. This is why UNESCO has launched the ResiliArt movement, whose purpose is to find ways of fostering the protection and promotion of cultural diversity in these difficult times.”

The famous singer and UNESCO Artist for Peace Gilberto Gil who contributed to the adoption of the Convention on Cultural Diversity when he was Minister of Culture of Brazil from 2003 to 2008, shared a video message on Instagram, promoting the positive objectives of the Be the One campaign and the importance of intercultural dialogue as a vector of peace.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, advertising executive and co-founder of the ABV group Nizan Guanaes also partook in the initiative. He highlighted that Brazil is the child of cultural diversity, and without it, there is no Brazil, and no world. UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, fashion designer and environmentalist Oskar Metsavaht showed further support. He added that this day was a way to celebrate the diverse range of culture, tangible and intangible, and how art and culture have been fundamental during this pandemic in bringing us closer to our culture and many others.
