Nadia Nadim “imagines the World to Come” with the UNESCO Forum

On 9 June, the football striker and UNESCO Champion for Girls’ and Women’s education Nadia Nadim contributed to the UNESCO Forum leading the reflection on what the future should look like after COVID-19

The COVID-19 health crisis has shaken our society and challenged our structures. In response, UNESCO has been hosting a forum to give voice to a range of personalities to think about the world in the aftermath of the pandemic. This forum focuses on the voices of women, whose views have not been sufficiently heard during the crisis.

This week, the footballer and UNESCO Champion for Girls’ and Women’s education Nadia Nadim thinks of the pandemic shock on our societies with those words:  “It showed us how vulnerable we are as human beings, how vulnerable our foundations are, how weak our economy and how not prepared our healthcare system is”.

Furthermore, Nadia Nadim gave reflections on how we could anticipate and prepare for the risk of future crises. She advocated for the inclusion of scientists and doctors in decision making, fair funding for healthcare systems, and more transparency, to allow information to travel faster in order to facilitate mediating risks. She concluded with these words: “I hope that we are going to use this crisis, this COVID-19 as an example and I hope that we’re going to learn from it and prepare for the future.”
