Zurab Tsereteli continues his dedication to UNESCO through the pandemic

Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli has continued his dedicated commitment to promoting the universal values of UNESCO through his art and educational activities.

Artist, architect, president of the Russian Academy of Arts and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli has been committed to undertaking numerous activities and projects in line with the values of UNESCO since 1996.

Despite the restrictions caused by the ongoing global health crisis, the Moscow International Foundation for Support to UNESCO continued under his leadership his educational programme by organizing workshops and online seminars. The programme is free for children and youth, and focuses on the development of art therapy.

In January 2020, Zurab Tsereteli opened an exhibition of his work based on the struggle for peace at the Headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva.

Every year he provides the exhibition space in the Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery free of charge for educational and research programs. From 2019 to 2020 he has created monumental sculptures including “Waiting for a Soldier,” dedicated to the achievement of civilians during the Second World War. He has also donated his sculpture, which remains as one of the major artworks at the UNESCO Headquarters;”The Birth of a New Man.”

In line with UNESCO’s aim to promote the ideas of humanism through art, in 2018-2019 Zurab Tsereteli organized the interdisciplinary programmes “Art-Science-Medicine” and “Humanistic Foundations and Social Functions of Art.”

In his capacity as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Zurab Tsereteli has contributed to the success of many projects and activities organized with the Organization, which aimed at preserving history and cultural memory, mutual respect and understanding between peoples.
